Saint-Quay-Portrieux boasts a small but charming collection of historic sites that tell the story of its maritime and seaside heritage:
The Old Port (Portrieux), with its narrow alleyways and traditional houses, bears witness to the history of the Newfoundland schooners that set sail from here in the 18th century. Stroll along the docks and stop by the Monday morning market, a must-see event in the town.
Don’t miss the Portrieux Lighthouse, a 10-meter-tall octagonal tower made of riveted sheet metal—one of the first of its kind installed in France in 1867, after being showcased atthe Paris World’s Fair. On land, the Saint-Michel mill—one of the few mills in Brittany still capable of grinding grain the old-fashioned way—opens its doors on special days.
For some interesting sights, explore the Kertugal megalithic park —chaos or dolmens? The debate is still open!—and admire Calan Castle (Ker Moor), an unusual villainspired by Eastern architecture and built in 1880, visible from the Customs Officers’ Trail. The Sainte-Anne Chapel in Portrieux, with its boat-hull-shaped vault and a painting depicting the harbor in 1777, is also worth a visit.
