Saint-Brieuc Bay

Right outside our campground, the vast Bay of Saint-Brieuc is a natural treasure in its own right. Designated a National Nature Reserve since 1998, it is the second-largest nature reserve in Brittany, covering more than 2,900 hectares of foreshore, 125 hectares of salt marshes, and 7 hectares of dunes.

Recognized as a site ofinternational importance for birdlife, the bay welcomes up to 35,000 migratory birds of 112 different species each winter: sandpipers, red-necked phalaropes, brant geese, oystercatchers… The scenery changes with the seasons: purple orchids in the spring in the Bon Abri dunes, mauve salt marshes dotted with sea lavender in the summer, glowing glasswort in the fall, and aerial ballets of migratory birds in the winter.

The Maison de la Baie in Hillion welcomes visitors year-round with exhibitions and nature walks led by the reserve’s rangers. The GR34 trail runs along the bay and offers superb hikes: the Hillion Peninsula loop (8.9 km), the Yffiniac Cove trail, and the panoramic view from Pointe des Guettes. The bay is also known for its mussel farming: the bouchot mussel beds are visible at low tide and can be visited in the summer aboard the Myti’bus.
